PTCL Breaks Silence on Easypaisa Deal Rumours But Leaves One Big Question Unanswered

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

PTCL says identifying the target of its proposed majority-stake acquisition is premature, while Easypaisa remains the leading name in market speculation.

PTCL has refused to confirm whether Easypaisa is the target of its proposed majority-stake acquisition, saying the company has not yet reached a final decision and negotiations over a binding offer are still underway.

The clarification came in response to a Pakistan Stock Exchange query after media reports linked PTCL’s planned investment to a major digital wallet. PTCL said its board had authorised the company to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan’s microfinance sector and later approved the submission of a binding offer for a majority shareholding in an unnamed target company.

The telecom operator stressed that identifying a specific target at this stage would be premature and speculative.

Why Easypaisa Is at the Centre of Speculation

Easypaisa has emerged as the most frequently mentioned potential target in market discussions following PTCL’s disclosure. However, PTCL has not named the company in its official statement, meaning the reported link remains unconfirmed.

The speculation comes after PTCL’s acquisition of Telenor Pakistan and the subsequent merger of Telenor’s operations into Ufone’s parent company, Pakistan Telecom Mobile Limited, which was completed on July 1, 2026.

A potential move into digital financial services would represent another major expansion for PTCL, bringing telecom and fintech operations closer together.

PTCL Says Its Microfinance Mandate Is Not New

PTCL also pointed to a July 21, 2023 communication to the PSX, when its board authorised the exploration of investment opportunities in Pakistan’s microfinance sector.

According to the company, that mandate remains valid and investment opportunities have continued to be evaluated in the ordinary course of business.

PTCL further cautioned that transactions of this nature may involve competitive bidding, meaning any potential outcome cannot yet be considered definitive.
