PTI’s convoy is continuing its journey from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa toward Khairabad, while political consultations intensify over the planned Islamabad protest.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march toward Islamabad entered its fourth day Wednesday as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi summoned a provincial cabinet meeting amid continuing political tensions over the planned protest.
Afridi will chair the meeting, where officials are expected to discuss political and administrative matters concerning the provincial government. The detailed agenda is expected to be issued later Wednesday.
The development comes as the PTI convoy led by Afridi continues its journey after reaching Mattani on the outskirts of Peshawar late Tuesday. The convoy had travelled from Kohat before moving toward Peshawar.
The protesters are scheduled to proceed toward Khairabad, near the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Punjab border, with the party expecting to reach the area on Oct. 8. Afridi is expected to announce the next phase of the protest there.
Afridi has described the protest as a “Test match,” indicating that the movement would unfold in stages rather than as a single-day demonstration. The PTI’s announced route has included stops in Lakki Marwat, Karak, Kohat and Mattani before the convoy moves onward toward Khairabad.
The march began from Lakki Marwat on Oct. 4 after talks between the federal government and PTI ended without resolving key differences. The negotiations were reported to have remained deadlocked over counterterrorism measures and the role of the KP government in addressing security challenges in the province.
Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged the government not to obstruct PTI’s march toward Islamabad, saying peaceful protests are a democratic right. Speaking to reporters alongside opposition leaders, Fazl said the government should trust PTI’s stated commitment to keeping the demonstration peaceful.
Fazl also backed broader political consultations and said an All-Parties Conference could be considered to develop a joint strategy on the country’s political challenges. He stressed that dialogue should remain an option and that political disputes should be addressed through constitutional and political means.
The JUI-F chief further urged the government to avoid additional confrontation if PTI intends to stage a peaceful demonstration in the federal capital.
