PDMA places emergency services on high alert as heavy monsoon rains cause fatalities, urban flooding, and infrastructure damage across Punjab.
LAHORE: At least three people were killed and three others injured as heavy monsoon rains swept across Punjab, triggering urban flooding, house collapses, and widespread disruption in several districts, officials said on Tuesday.
According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), one man died and another person was injured when a house collapsed in Uch Sharif, Bahawalpur district. In Khushab, two children drowned during the ongoing spell of monsoon rains.
Separate roof collapse incidents in Mandi Bahauddin and Lodhran left two more people injured, while authorities also confirmed damage to at least one house in Bahawalpur.
The PDMA clarified that nine additional deaths reported the same day were unrelated to the current rainfall. Those incidents included drownings in canals and rivers in Kot Addu, Narowal, and Attock, while four children died of suffocation after becoming trapped inside a parked vehicle in Mianwali.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa instructed deputy commissioners across the province to remain on high alert as heavy rainfall is expected to continue through August 5. He said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is closely monitoring the situation and has directed district administrations, Rescue 1122, the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), and other departments to maintain full emergency preparedness.
Lahore witnessed several hours of intense rainfall that inundated major roads and residential areas, causing severe traffic disruptions. Water accumulated up to one-and-a-half feet in low-lying areas, including Township, Kacha Jail Road, Haider Road, and the Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate.
According to Wasa Lahore, the city received an average of 24.8 millimetres of rainfall, while the highest measurement of 66.4mm was recorded at the Wasa Head Office in Gulberg. Significant rainfall was also reported in Shadipura, Mughalpura, Mannawan, Johar Town, Tajpura, and nearby localities.
Faisalabad recorded the province’s highest rainfall at 103mm, resulting in extensive urban flooding. Water levels reached up to 23 inches in some areas as Wasa teams continued drainage operations throughout the day.
Heavy rain also inundated roads in Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin, where dewatering efforts remained underway. Meanwhile, Jhelum received only light rainfall, and officials said all waterlogging points had been cleared by the afternoon.
