Qualcomm’s next premium Snapdragon platform will feature Matrix Cores, dedicated on-chip memory and AI-enhanced rendering capabilities.
Qualcomm is preparing to introduce a new premium Snapdragon chipset featuring its next-generation Adreno Neural Fusion GPU, bringing dedicated artificial intelligence processing directly into the mobile graphics architecture.
The upcoming Snapdragon platform will be the first Qualcomm chip to feature dedicated AI GPU cores known as Matrix Cores. The company says these cores are integrated into each of the GPU’s three 1.45GHz slices, allowing AI models to run closer to the graphics pipeline.
According to Qualcomm, keeping AI processing within the GPU architecture can reduce the need to move data between different parts of the chip. This approach could lower latency while improving power efficiency during graphics-intensive workloads.
The new GPU also features 18MB of dedicated High Performance Memory (HPM) cache). Qualcomm says the cache is designed to keep frequently used graphics data, including tiles, frame buffers and compute workloads, closer to the GPU.
By keeping more data on-chip, the architecture can reduce transfers to and from system memory. Qualcomm says this could improve efficiency during demanding gaming and other graphics-heavy applications.
The company claims that Neural Fusion can provide up to a 40% improvement in power efficiency when enabled. If achieved in real-world workloads, the improvement could help extend gaming sessions while maintaining graphics performance.
AI is also expected to play a greater role in rendering. Qualcomm says its new architecture supports AI-enhanced rendering, which can potentially improve image quality, frame-rate stability and overall efficiency.
Developer support is already being expanded, with Unity and Unreal Engine having integrated Qualcomm’s Neural Fusion technology. This could give developers tools to take advantage of the new GPU architecture in compatible games and applications.
The Adreno Neural Fusion GPU is expected to form part of Qualcomm’s next flagship Snapdragon platform. Qualcomm has already disclosed details about the platform’s next-generation Oryon CPU, while further information about the processor is expected at the company’s upcoming event.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit is scheduled for Sept. 22-24, where the company is expected to provide additional details about the new platform. Qualcomm will also reveal information about its next-generation NPU, offering a broader look at how AI workloads will be distributed across the CPU, GPU and dedicated AI hardware.
