Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to nominate Pakistan’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Syed Haider Shah, as the country’s next permanent representative to the United Nations.
Pakistan is preparing for a diplomatic transition at the United Nations, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif deciding to nominate Ambassador Syed Haider Shah as the country’s next permanent representative, according to a report published Oct. 17.
Shah, who currently serves as Pakistan’s ambassador to the Netherlands, is expected to replace Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who has assumed charge as Pakistan’s foreign secretary. An official notification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to formalize the appointment.
The precise date of Shah’s appointment has not yet been announced.
The proposed appointment comes as Pakistan adjusts its diplomatic leadership following Ahmad’s move from the United Nations to the Foreign Office’s top administrative position. Ahmad previously represented Pakistan at the global body before taking charge as foreign secretary.
Shah brings diplomatic experience and a background in international affairs to the role. His nomination would place him at the center of Pakistan’s engagement with the United Nations, where member states discuss issues ranging from regional conflicts and international security to economic cooperation and human rights.
As permanent representative, Shah would be responsible for presenting Pakistan’s position on international issues, engaging with representatives of other member states and advancing Islamabad’s diplomatic priorities through the UN system.
The position is particularly important to Pakistan’s efforts to raise concerns about regional stability, international peace and security, and other longstanding foreign policy issues. The United Nations provides a multilateral forum where Pakistan can communicate its positions, participate in international discussions and pursue cooperation with other countries.
The appointment would also mark a change in Pakistan’s diplomatic representation in New York following Ahmad’s transition to the Foreign Secretary’s office. The Foreign Office notification is expected to formally confirm Shah’s new assignment and complete the appointment process.
Pakistan continues to rely on its diplomatic network to strengthen international partnerships and present its perspective on regional and global developments. The country’s permanent mission to the United Nations serves as a key channel for engagement with member states and participation in the organization’s diplomatic processes.
Shah is expected to assume his new responsibilities in the coming days, although the timing remains subject to formal confirmation.
