Taylor Swift has explained how childhood imagery, toy characters and carefully chosen words carry multiple meanings in her ‘Toy Story 5’ song.
Taylor Swift has revealed the layered meanings behind her song “I Knew It, I Knew You,” explaining how she used childhood imagery and references to the Toy Story universe to connect the track with the story of Toy Story 5.
The 36-year-old singer discussed the song during an appearance on iHeartCountry House Party on Saturday, Sept. 5. Swift co-wrote the track with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff and said several lyrics were deliberately crafted to support multiple interpretations.
Swift said she enjoys watching fans closely analyze her lyrics and discover meanings that may not be immediately apparent. She explained that writing a song for a movie presents a particular challenge because a songwriter must find creative ways to capture elements of an entire story within a limited number of lines.
One example she highlighted was the song’s opening lyric, which references summer grass and the sensation of falling freely while growing up. Swift said she intentionally used the word “daze” because it can also evoke the idea of “days.”
The word choice reflects the hazy nature of childhood memories, according to Swift. Looking back on childhood can feel like recalling something beautiful but slightly blurred, allowing the lyric to connect the passage of time with the experience of growing up.
The reference to grass also has a direct connection to Toy Story. Since the franchise centers on toys, its characters experience the world from a much lower perspective than humans. From that viewpoint, blades of grass can appear unusually large.
Swift said the image also evokes familiar childhood experiences involving outdoor play and imagination while reflecting the perspective of the toys.
Another significant image involves parachutes and free fall. Swift explained that the reference can be interpreted as a nod to the small plastic army figures featured in the Toy Story universe. At the same time, the imagery carries a broader emotional meaning.
A parachute can symbolize having someone available to provide support during difficult moments. Swift connected that idea with the transition from childhood to adulthood, which can be uncertain and overwhelming.
Swift also emphasized her preference for incorporating specific details into her songwriting rather than relying solely on broad emotional themes. The response to the song, she said, has highlighted the attention she gives to individual words and images.
“I Knew It, I Knew You” was released June 5, 2026, as an original song for the Toy Story 5 soundtrack, two weeks before the film’s theatrical release.
