Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to consult Tehran’s leadership after receiving Washington’s position through Qatari mediators.
Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran have entered a critical phase after Tehran received Washington’s response to an Iranian seven-day confidence-building proposal through Qatari mediators.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Qatari mediators in Doha on Tuesday night and was briefed on the US position, according to an Iranian official familiar with the talks. Reuters also reported that Araghchi was expected to return to Tehran to consult Iran’s leadership on Washington’s response.
The latest exchange comes as the two sides continue indirect diplomatic contacts despite significant differences over the sequence and implementation of any potential agreement.
At the center of the discussions is Tehran’s seven-day proposal, which aims to rebuild confidence and establish a pathway toward reviving and expanding an earlier US-Iran memorandum of understanding reached in June.
Under the Iranian proposal, Tehran has offered to restore normal maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if Washington meets its stated conditions. The plan also calls for a return to broader negotiations, including discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major international energy route, making developments surrounding its maritime traffic a significant concern for regional governments and international markets.
Iran has said its conditions include measures related to US sanctions, the naval blockade and other issues. Iranian officials have maintained that Washington must meet Tehran’s requirements before normal operations through the strait can resume.
US President Donald Trump had previously rejected Iran’s seven-day proposal, but indirect contacts between the two sides have continued through mediators. Qatar has played a central role in carrying messages between Washington and Tehran, while Pakistan has also been involved in diplomatic efforts.
The latest exchange indicates that communication channels between the United States and Iran remain active despite their public differences. However, the exchange of proposals has not resulted in a final agreement.
Araghchi’s expected consultations in Tehran will help shape Iran’s next response to Washington. The key issue remains whether the two sides can reach an understanding on the order and timing of reciprocal measures.
For now, diplomacy remains underway, while major issues involving the Strait of Hormuz, US sanctions, hostilities and Iran’s nuclear program remain unresolved. No final agreement or formal announcement ending the conflict has been made.
