WhatsApp is introducing stronger account protection, added context for unknown calls and multiple passkey support across iOS and Android.
WhatsApp is rolling out a series of new security features for its iOS and Android apps, giving users more ways to protect their accounts and identify potentially suspicious calls and messages.
The most significant update is an improvement to WhatsApp’s two-step verification system. Users who receive the feature can now secure their accounts with a password rather than relying solely on a PIN. The password must contain at least eight characters, including at least one letter and one number.
Unlike a short PIN, a password provides more possible combinations, potentially making it more difficult for unauthorized users to guess the security credential. The new option is available through account settings for users who have received the update.
WhatsApp is gradually rolling out the password-based option through the latest versions of its iOS and Android apps. Users who cannot see the feature yet may have to wait until it becomes available on their devices.

WhatsApp is also introducing additional information about unknown callers on Android. When users receive a call from an unfamiliar number, the app can provide context that may help them decide whether to answer.
The information can include whether the caller is using a number from another country and how many groups the caller and recipient have in common.
The additional details could help users identify suspicious calls and make more informed decisions before responding to unfamiliar numbers, particularly as unwanted calls and scams remain a concern for messaging-app users.
Multiple passkeys supported
Another security improvement allows users to add more than one passkey to their WhatsApp accounts.
Passkeys provide an alternative to traditional passwords for signing in, while multiple passkeys can offer greater flexibility for users accessing their accounts across different devices.
WhatsApp is also testing a Scam Alert feature with a limited number of Android beta users. The system uses on-device machine learning to examine messages from unknown contacts for patterns associated with scams.
According to the information provided, the analysis takes place on the device, meaning message content is not sent to WhatsApp or Meta for this process. If a potential scam is detected, the app can display a warning and allow users to block or report the contact or mark the conversation as trusted.
The feature is optional and disabled by default, and users can turn it off at any time.
Other WhatsApp features in development
WhatsApp is simultaneously working on several other features. A new payment section could allow users to manage cards, billing details and shipping information, while direct payments to contacts are also being explored in supported markets.
The platform is rolling out admin profiles for channels, allowing administrators to use a separate name and profile photo so followers can identify which admin published an update.
On iOS, new chat-theme categories include Featured, Nature, Live, Minimal and Doodle. WhatsApp will automatically adjust chat-bubble colors to maintain readable text.
Another feature in development, called “To You,” is designed to collect conversations in which users have been mentioned or received replies, potentially making important interactions easier to find.
The features are being released on different schedules, with some already rolling out and others remaining in beta testing or development.
