WhatsApp Tests AI Agents That Users Can Connect Directly to Chats

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

WhatsApp is testing third-party AI agents and bots that users can connect to dedicated chats through API keys, with the feature currently limited to selected users.

WhatsApp has started rolling out support for third-party AI agents and automated bots, giving some users the ability to connect external services directly to dedicated chats within the messaging app.

The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.35.3 and is currently available to a limited number of users in selected countries. Most Android users do not yet have access to the new Agents section in WhatsApp settings.

The new system allows users to add and configure an external agent without opening a separate app or website. During setup, users can assign the agent a name and profile picture, which will then appear in the WhatsApp chat list.

WhatsApp currently allows up to five agents to be connected to a single account. The feature supports both AI-powered agents and conventional bots designed to perform specific tasks or respond to predefined commands.

API key required to connect agents

Once an agent has been configured, WhatsApp generates an API key that users must copy and add to the platform where the agent is hosted. The exact setup process may vary depending on the service provider.

Users can generate a new API key if they need to reset an existing connection. Once connected, the agent communicates with the user through a dedicated individual WhatsApp conversation.

Agents cannot access other chats

WhatsApp has placed limits on what connected agents can access. An agent can only see messages shared with it in its dedicated conversation and cannot access unrelated chats, contacts or media.

For now, agents also cannot be added to WhatsApp groups or communities.

WhatsApp warns that AI agents can provide inaccurate information, advising users to verify important information before relying on AI-generated responses.

Users can remove connected agents

Users can manage connected agents through WhatsApp settings, including changing an agent’s name or profile picture.

Removing an agent disconnects it from the conversation and prevents users from sending further messages or receiving new responses. However, existing messages remain in the chat after removal.

If users want to reconnect an agent, they must set it up again and generate a new API key.

Agent chats are not end-to-end encrypted

WhatsApp says conversations with third-party agents are not considered end-to-end encrypted. These messages are processed through a Meta service on behalf of the agent developer, meaning the developer operating the agent can access messages as part of providing the service.

The limitation does not apply to normal personal WhatsApp conversations, where messages and calls between users continue to use end-to-end encryption.

The limited rollout provides an early look at WhatsApp’s plans to support external AI agents and automated services within its messaging platform. WhatsApp has not confirmed when the feature will be available to all users.
