“You’re Pashtun, You Can’t Dress Like This”, Ex-Afghan Journalist Gulalai Karimi Reveals Threats and Attacks in France

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Former Afghan journalist and TV anchor Gulalai Karimi has defended her modeling career and lifestyle in France after facing criticism, threats, and alleged attacks from members of the Afghan community abroad.

Former Afghan television anchor and journalist Gulalai Karimi has become the center of an intense debate after embracing a modeling career in France, a move that has sparked criticism from some Afghans who argue that her appearance and lifestyle conflict with traditional cultural and religious values.

Karimi, who previously worked for Afghan broadcasters Shamshad TV and Lemar TV during Afghanistan’s former government, has built a strong social media presence since relocating to France. She currently has hundreds of thousands of followers across Instagram and TikTok, where she frequently shares content related to fashion, modeling, and her daily life.

The controversy gained renewed attention after Deutsche Welle (DW) Dari published a video report on June 2 titled “From Kandahar to Paris: The Controversial Story of Gulalai Karimi.” The report highlighted the mixed reactions her online content has generated among Afghans both inside and outside the country.

Defending her choices, Karimi said she enjoys expressing herself through fashion and believes her style reflects her personality. She rejected accusations linking her appearance to immoral behavior, saying such assumptions are unfair and deeply upsetting.

Karimi also revealed that she has faced serious security concerns in Paris. According to her, some individuals from the Afghan community allegedly attacked her because of her appearance and lifestyle. She claimed she has been forced to change her residence four times due to safety fears.

The former journalist further disclosed that she once interviewed Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, who had advised her to be cautious about her clothing choices.
