Court directs KP Chief Minister to appear after repeated absences in high-profile case.
ISLAMABAD: The District and Sessions Court here on Wednesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Suhail Afridi after he failed to appear in a high-profile case involving allegations of misleading state institutions and tarnishing their reputation.
The court, presiding over the case, directed law enforcement authorities to apprehend Afridi and present him before the court by April 19. This marks the second time the court has issued such warrants due to his repeated absences during proceedings.
The case, filed under charges of making misleading statements against federal and provincial bodies, has attracted significant public attention amid growing political tensions. Court officials emphasized that compliance with legal summons is mandatory, highlighting the judiciary’s commitment to uphold accountability regardless of political stature.
Lawyers representing the complainant argued that Afridi’s alleged statements had a detrimental effect on the credibility of government institutions, necessitating strict judicial action. Meanwhile, Afridi’s legal team has not publicly responded to the latest warrants but has previously challenged the case, citing procedural issues.
The Islamabad judiciary’s firm stance underscores ongoing efforts to reinforce the rule of law and ensure that elected officials are answerable to the legal framework. Analysts note that this case could have broader political ramifications ahead of upcoming provincial and national legislative activities.
