Officials slam proposal as unrealistic and offensive, insisting World Cup places must be earned on merit not politics.
Italy has flatly rejected a controversial suggestion that it could replace Iran at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, dismissing the idea as both inappropriate and damaging to the integrity of international football.
The proposal, reportedly raised by Italian businessman Paolo Zampolli in discussions with Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino, emerged amid uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation due to escalating regional tensions and security concerns.
But Italy’s government responded swiftly and decisively.
Sports Minister Andrea Abodi made it clear that qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 cannot be granted outside competitive play. He stressed that Italy’s absence from the tournament must stand, noting that returning without earning qualification would be both “not possible and not appropriate.”
The rejection didn’t stop there. Italian Olympic Committee president Luciano Buonfiglio called the idea outright offensive, underscoring that World Cup participation must be based on merit and performance—not political maneuvering.
Adding to the backlash, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti labeled the proposal “shameful,” signaling a unified stance across the Italian government against any attempt to bypass sporting rules.
Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament after a shock playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina marking another painful absence for one of football’s historic giants.
The 2026 World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran remains officially placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, despite the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
The controversy highlights a broader tension between global politics and sport, raising questions about whether off-field developments could ever influence football’s biggest stage. For now, Italy’s message is clear: the road to the World Cup runs only through the pitch.
