A dismissed criminal case involving damage at the Lincoln Memorial has reportedly triggered tensions inside the Trump administration, with Jeanine Pirro’s future as Washington’s top federal prosecutor now under scrutiny.
US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering removing Jeanine Pirro as US Attorney for the District of Columbia after federal prosecutors moved to dismiss a criminal case involving alleged damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The controversy centers on charges against former Olympian David Hearn, who had been accused in connection with damage to the memorial. Federal prosecutors later sought to drop the case after evidence indicated that the peeling liner at the reflecting pool resulted from a rushed and substandard renovation project rather than deliberate criminal conduct.
According to reports, Trump was frustrated that the Justice Department’s filing was made without his knowledge. He publicly criticized Pirro, accusing her of yielding under judicial pressure and abandoning the prosecution during court proceedings.
Pirro defended her office’s handling of the case, stating that critical records concerning the faulty renovation were not provided by the United States Department of the Interior until after the original indictment had already been filed. She argued that the newly disclosed information significantly altered the case.
However, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum rejected that explanation, maintaining that the damage was the result of intentional actions rather than construction defects. His department continues to support the original allegations.
