Silent Giant Awakens: Pakistan Navy Enters a New Era with Hangor-Class Submarine Commissioned in China

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class submarine commissioned in China marks a strategic leap in undersea warfare capability and maritime defense cooperation with Beijing.

A major shift in Pakistan’s naval defense landscape unfolded in China as the Pakistan Navy officially commissioned its first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M HANGOR, in a high-level ceremony attended by President Asif Ali Zardari. The development signals a significant upgrade in undersea warfare capability at a time when maritime security in the region is increasingly under focus.

The ceremony, held with the participation of senior military leadership including Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, highlighted both strategic modernization and deepening defense cooperation between Pakistan and China. The induction of the submarine is being viewed as a milestone in Pakistan’s long-term naval expansion plan.

President Zardari described the commissioning as a historic moment in the Navy’s journey toward technological advancement and operational readiness. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a credible and balanced defense posture while ensuring the protection of its sovereignty, maritime interests, and key sea trade routes.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf underscored the strategic importance of secure maritime corridors, warning that disruptions to vital sea lanes pose risks not only to regional stability but also to global energy and trade flows. He emphasized that modern naval forces equipped with advanced technologies are essential for maintaining a rules-based maritime order.

The Hangor-class submarines are equipped with advanced weapon systems, modern sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, allowing extended underwater endurance and enhanced stealth capabilities. Naval officials say these features will significantly strengthen Pakistan’s deterrence capability and operational reach in the Arabian Sea.

The naming of the submarine carries symbolic weight. The original PNS Hangor holds a prominent place in Pakistan’s naval history after its action during the 1971 war, where it achieved a rare wartime success against an enemy naval vessel. The new class is seen as a continuation of that legacy, now reinforced with modern technology and expanded mission capabilities.

The commissioning also reflects growing defense collaboration between Pakistan and China, with both navies increasingly aligned in training, technology transfer, and strategic maritime interests. Officials from the People’s Liberation Army Navy were also present at the ceremony, underscoring the bilateral dimension of the development.

Top civilian and military leadership, including the Prime Minister, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Chief of Defence Forces, extended congratulations to the Pakistan Navy on what they termed a landmark achievement in strengthening national defense capabilities.

As regional maritime dynamics continue to evolve, the induction of the Hangor-class submarine is expected to play a key role in enhancing Pakistan’s underwater defense posture and safeguarding critical sea routes vital for trade and energy security.
