LAHORE: A spell of heavy rainfall swept across Lahore on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief from intense heat but also triggering waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several parts of the city.
According to weather authorities, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Nishtar Town, where 48.5 millimeters of rain fell during the downpour. Significant rainfall was also reported in the airport area, while Johar Town, Lakshmi Chowk, Mughalpura, Upper Mall, Tajpura and several other localities received moderate showers.
The rain transformed the city’s weather after days of high temperatures and humid conditions. Cooler temperatures and cloudy skies encouraged residents to step outside and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.
Despite the welcome change in weather, rainwater quickly accumulated in low-lying areas, underpasses and on major roads. Traffic flow slowed considerably in several parts of Lahore as standing water created difficulties for commuters and motorists.
Municipal authorities and rescue teams were deployed immediately after the rainfall began. Emergency crews worked to remove accumulated water from roads and restore normal traffic conditions as quickly as possible.
An unfortunate incident was reported in Wapda Town, where a wall collapsed onto a rickshaw during the rain. Two people were injured in the accident. Rescue 1122 officials responded to the scene and shifted one injured person to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) closely monitored the situation throughout the city. Officials visited key drainage points and major roads to supervise water clearance operations and ensure disposal stations remained fully operational.
Drainage teams worked continuously to pump water out of affected areas, particularly low-lying neighborhoods and underpasses where water accumulation posed challenges for traffic and residents.
The district administration also remained on high alert, directing field staff to respond rapidly to public complaints and emergency situations. Authorities focused on maintaining traffic movement, clearing blocked sewerage lines and minimizing disruption caused by the rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast additional rain in parts of Punjab over the coming days. The department warned that thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rainfall and isolated hailstorms may affect some areas.
Officials have advised citizens to remain cautious during periods of heavy rain and avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged roads. Authorities said monitoring efforts and preparedness measures will continue as weather conditions remain unstable.
Lahore experienced similar episodes of rain and hailstorms earlier this month, which also resulted in urban flooding and traffic disruptions. Officials say lessons learned from previous weather events are being used to improve response operations during the current spell.
