Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir have directed police to initiate legal proceedings against two individuals accused of promoting sedition through speeches, written material, and digital content.
MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has ordered sedition proceedings against two members associated with the banned Joint Awami Action Committee, marking a significant development in the region’s ongoing efforts to address activities deemed harmful to state authority.
According to an official notification issued by the Home Department, the individuals named for legal action are Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a resident of Bank Road, Muzaffarabad, and Mehran Arshad Khawaja, a resident of Dadyal, Mirpur.
Authorities allege that both individuals committed acts of sedition through their public speeches, written material, video recordings, and audio content. The government maintains that the available evidence suggests violations that warrant criminal investigation under applicable laws.
The Home Department has directed the Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) in Muzaffarabad and Mirpur to review the available record under Section 196 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Officials have been instructed to formally register cases against the accused and complete investigations in accordance with legal procedures.
The notification further states that once investigations are finalized, police authorities should submit challans before the relevant courts for judicial proceedings.
The latest move comes amid heightened scrutiny of political activism and public mobilization activities in Azad Kashmir, where authorities have increasingly emphasized maintaining public order and adherence to the law.
