WANA: Amid growing concerns over deteriorating security conditions in South Waziristan Lower, tribal elders, political leaders, civil society representatives, youth activists and community members have announced a large-scale Waziristan National Peace Jirga scheduled for June 14.
The decision was made during a peace jirga held in Wana on Wednesday, where participants expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of kidnapping for ransom, targeted killings, bomb explosions and other acts of violence affecting the region. Attendees stressed the urgent need for collective efforts to restore lasting peace and stability.
During the meeting, participants unanimously agreed that a broader consultative process was necessary to address the worsening law and order situation. As a result, they decided to convene a larger peace jirga on Sunday, June 14, aimed at developing a comprehensive strategy for peace and public security across the region.
A key issue raised during the gathering was the reported abduction of well-known footballer Sabeel Noor, who was allegedly kidnapped from Dog Football Ground a day earlier. Jirga participants strongly demanded his immediate and safe recovery, describing the incident as deeply concerning and reflective of the region’s growing security challenges.
Speakers at the event stated that security conditions in Wana and South Waziristan Lower have remained alarming over the past one and a half years. They noted that ongoing violence has disrupted daily life, discouraged investment and severely impacted commercial and economic activities.
Participants highlighted that traders, students, laborers and ordinary residents continue to face increasing hardships due to recurring security incidents. They emphasized that sustainable development and prosperity cannot be achieved without peace and stability.
Several speakers proposed launching a door-to-door consultation campaign involving tribal elders and representatives from various schools of thought. The initiative would seek public input and build consensus on practical measures for restoring peace while ensuring that all segments of society are included in future decision-making.
Addressing the jirga, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf National Assembly member Zubair Wazir and Provincial Assembly member Ajab Gul Wazir, along with other speakers, reaffirmed their commitment to continuing consultations and peace initiatives until lasting stability is achieved in the region.
The gathering concluded with a unanimous declaration that the people of South Waziristan can no longer endure continued violence and bloodshed. Participants pledged to work collectively with tribal elders, political stakeholders, social organizations and community leaders to formulate a unified roadmap aimed at restoring peace throughout the district.
The upcoming Waziristan National Peace Jirga on June 14 is expected to review the overall security situation, discuss public recommendations and outline future actions for strengthening peace and stability in South Waziristan.
