LODHRAN: A tragic incident in Lodhran claimed the lives of two Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) workers during sewer cleaning operations, prompting swift action from the Punjab government against officials allegedly responsible for negligence.
Following the incident, Punjab Secretary Housing took immediate notice and directed authorities to register a criminal case against those found responsible. The move came amid growing concerns over workplace safety and the failure to implement mandatory protective measures for sanitation workers.
As part of the initial action, Lodhran WASA Managing Director Javed Akhtar was suspended from his position. Authorities said negligence in ensuring worker safety is an unforgivable offense and that strict accountability would be enforced.
Acting on the instructions of the Secretary Housing, police registered a case at City Police Station against WASA MD Javed Akhtar, Site In-Charge Roshan Rehan, and Supervisor Ali Raza. The case has been filed under relevant legal provisions related to negligence and workplace safety violations.
In addition to the criminal proceedings, departmental inquiries have also been ordered against the three officials under the PEEDA Act. The inquiries will examine whether standard operating procedures and safety protocols were ignored, leading to the fatal incident.
