Spain Edge Uruguay to Seal Knockout Spot as South American Giants Crash Out of FIFA World Cup 2026

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Alex Baena’s stunning first-half strike secured a 1-0 victory over Uruguay as Spain finished top of Group H and advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage.

Spain secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after defeating Uruguay 1-0 in a tense Group H encounter in Guadalajara on Friday. Alex Baena’s first-half goal proved decisive, while Uruguay’s campaign ended in disappointment with an early tournament exit.

Luis de la Fuente’s side completed the group stage unbeaten, collecting seven points from three matches with two wins and one draw to finish at the top of Group H. Tournament newcomers Cape Verde also advanced after drawing all three of their group matches, while Uruguay finished with just two points, level with Saudi Arabia.

The only goal came three minutes before halftime when Baena unleashed a powerful long-range effort. Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to control the shot, allowing the ball to slip into the net. The strike arrived while two players were receiving treatment, but play continued and Baena took full advantage.

Spain faced a determined Uruguay side that created several promising moments. Darwin Nunez missed the visitors’ best first-half opportunity after being played through by Federico Valverde, while substitute Federico Vinas also failed to capitalize after the break.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon preserved Spain’s lead with crucial saves against Mathias Olivera and Nicolas de la Cruz as Uruguay pushed desperately for an equalizer. Spain nearly doubled their advantage late in the match when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar.

After the victory, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s resilience, highlighting their ability to overcome three demanding group-stage matches. Baena described his match-winning strike as one of the most satisfying goals of his career.
