PEMRA Cracks Down on Geo News, Orders Immediate Suspension Over ‘Safar-e-Ishq’ Broadcast

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Pakistan’s electronic media regulator has suspended Geo News for 15 days, alleging that a Muharram transmission contained unacceptable religious depiction in violation of broadcasting laws and the PEMRA Code of Conduct.

Pakistan’s electronic media regulator has ordered the immediate suspension of Geo News’ broadcasting license for 15 days, citing alleged violations during the Muharram transmission of the program Safar-e-Ishq aired on June 26, 2026 (10 Muharram).

According to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the program included what it described as “unacceptable religious depiction and imaginative representation.” The regulator stated that such content violates the channel’s licensing conditions and is inconsistent with Pakistan’s religious, social, and cultural values.

PEMRA said the broadcast breached multiple provisions of media laws and the authority’s code of conduct. It added that the content had hurt, or was likely to hurt, religious sentiments and could undermine religious harmony, prompting the decision to suspend the channel’s license.

Under the order, Geo News’ transmissions will remain suspended on satellite platforms and all broadcasting networks for 15 days. Distributors and operators have been instructed to ensure immediate compliance with the regulator’s directives.
