Pakistan Airports Authority has introduced special monsoon safety measures at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, including temporary morning runway closures and enhanced precautions to reduce bird strike risks.
LAHORE: The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced special operational measures at Allama Iqbal International Airport to strengthen flight safety during the 2026 monsoon season.
According to the authority, bird activity around the airport increases significantly during monsoon weather, particularly below 3,000 feet. Pilots have therefore been instructed to exercise extra caution during takeoff and landing to minimize the risk of bird strikes.
The PAA has also advised airlines to carry additional fuel to help manage any potential ground or airborne delays, ensuring that flight operations remain safe and uninterrupted despite changing weather conditions.
Under the new safety plan, both runways at Lahore airport will remain temporarily unavailable every day from 5:01 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. between July 5 and September 15, 2026. The authority said these hours coincide with peak bird movement, making preventive action necessary.
Scheduled commercial flights will continue to operate normally outside the temporary closure window. The PAA added that in the event of an emergency, the runways will be made available immediately to accommodate aircraft requiring urgent landing.
