Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 to secure their first FIFA World Cup knockout victory since 1938 and book a place in the Round of 16.
Switzerland ended an 88-year wait for a FIFA World Cup knockout victory with a commanding 2-0 win over Algeria in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32, advancing to the Round of 16 in one of the nation’s greatest football achievements.
The Swiss team made an immediate impact, taking the lead in the 10th minute when rising star Johan Manzambi threaded a precise pass to Breel Embolo. The striker kept his composure and finished clinically, giving Switzerland an early advantage that set the tone for the match.
Switzerland strengthened their grip on the contest just 46 seconds into the second half. Dan Ndoye capitalized on a swift attacking move and calmly found the back of the net, leaving Algeria with a mountain to climb.
Algeria’s best opportunity came before halftime when Farès Chaïbi tested goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but the Swiss shot-stopper responded with a comfortable save. The African side struggled to create clear-cut chances afterward as Switzerland controlled possession and defended confidently until the final whistle.
Twenty-year-old Johan Manzambi emerged as one of the match’s standout performers. His assist raised his direct goal contributions to five in the tournament, the most by a Swiss player at a single World Cup since 1966, highlighting his growing influence on the international stage.
The victory sends Switzerland into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana. After ending a drought that stretched back to 1938, Switzerland now heads into the next round with renewed belief and ambitions of extending its remarkable World Cup campaign.
