Scotland and Hearts legend Craig Gordon has retired at the age of 43, ending a remarkable career defined by record-breaking achievements, resilience, and 84 international appearances.
Scotland goalkeeping legend Craig Gordon has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 43, bringing an end to a distinguished 24-year career that established him as one of the country’s greatest-ever goalkeepers.
The Hearts and Scotland icon confirmed his decision in an emotional message on social media, reflecting on a lifelong dream of representing both Heart of Midlothian and the Scottish national team.
“Everyone has dreams,” Gordon wrote. “Mine were probably no different to most kids’—to play for my club and my country. Improbable? Perhaps. Impossible? Absolutely not.”
Gordon retires with an impressive collection of silverware, including six league titles, four Scottish Cups, and five Scottish League Cups. During his career, he represented Hearts, Sunderland, and Celtic, earning widespread recognition for his outstanding reflexes, leadership, and consistency.
One of the defining moments of his career came in 2007 when Sunderland signed him from Hearts for a then-British record £9 million transfer fee for a goalkeeper, underlining his reputation as one of Europe’s elite shot-stoppers.
Despite suffering multiple serious injuries, Gordon repeatedly returned to top-level football, becoming a symbol of resilience and determination throughout his career.
On the international stage, Gordon earned 84 caps for Scotland after making his senior debut in 2004. His final appearance came in Scotland’s FIFA World Cup 2026 warm-up victory over Curaçao in May, although he did not feature during the World Cup finals.
In his farewell message, Gordon thanked supporters and reflected on the privilege of representing Scotland on the biggest stages, saying he had “lived my dreams” and would always be grateful for his extraordinary journey.
