WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday in New Jersey, where he is expected to present the trophy to the tournament winners following the championship match between Spain and Argentina, the White House has confirmed.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump will travel to the final after attending a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York. She described the tournament as “the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has drawn millions of fans worldwide and marked the first men’s World Cup to feature 48 teams. Trump chose not to attend earlier matches, saving his first stadium appearance for the tournament’s final.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously indicated that Trump would present the World Cup trophy, and the White House has now officially confirmed those plans. It has not disclosed which team the US president will support in the Spain-Argentina showdown.
Trump’s involvement in the tournament has drawn attention throughout the competition. Earlier this month, he said he had asked Infantino to review the red-card decision against United States forward Folarin Balogun. FIFA later lifted the player’s one-match suspension, although the US was eliminated after a 4-1 defeat to Belgium.
