Candles, Tears, and Memories: Nepal Honors Mountaineering Legend Nirmal Purja

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Former classmates, teachers, and students gathered in Nepal to honor legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja, celebrating a life that inspired millions after his death in Pakistan’s Broad Peak avalanche.

CHITWAN, Nepal: Nepal is mourning the loss of legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja, whose remarkable journey from a small-town student to one of the world’s greatest climbers came to a tragic end after a deadly avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.

An emotional memorial was held at Small Heaven School in Chitwan, where family members, former classmates, teachers, and students gathered to celebrate Purja’s extraordinary life. Candles were lit, flowers were placed before his portrait, and heartfelt prayers were offered in memory of the British-Nepali climber, whose body was recovered after the avalanche that claimed the lives of 10 climbers last Thursday.

Those who knew Purja before he became a global mountaineering icon remembered him as an ambitious and fearless young boy. Former classmate Dhiraj Bahadur Panta said friends across Nepal and around the world had hoped for his safe return after he was reported missing. He described the loss as devastating, saying Nepal had lost a man who inspired countless people through his determination and achievements.

Teachers echoed those sentiments, recalling Purja as a disciplined, honest, and exceptionally confident student. Hostel supervisor Shailendra Baral said he always stood out for his courage and unwavering commitment to pursuing meaningful goals, qualities that later defined his legendary climbing career.

Purja gained worldwide recognition in 2019 when he achieved what many believed impossible—climbing all 14 of the world’s mountains above 8,000 meters in just over six months, breaking a long-standing record. The historic feat was later documented in a Netflix film that introduced his inspiring story to a global audience and elevated Nepal’s reputation in international mountaineering.

His legacy grew even stronger in 2021 when he became part of the all-Nepali team that completed the first successful winter ascent of K2, one of the world’s most dangerous peaks. During a visit to his hometown in 2022 for a screening of his documentary, Purja encouraged young people to dream beyond their circumstances and pursue ambitious goals with determination.

Students attending the memorial said his achievements remain a lasting source of inspiration within the school community. Many described him as more than a national hero, remembering him as a symbol of resilience, courage, and perseverance.
