Pakistan’s decision to leave experienced pacer Mohammad Abbas out of the second Test despite his match-leading performance has ignited criticism, with selectors defending the move as a tactical decision based on pitch conditions.
Pakistan’s decision to omit veteran fast bowler Mohammad Abbas from the playing XI for the second Test against the West Indies has become one of the most talked-about selection controversies in recent Test cricket.
Abbas was Pakistan’s standout performer in the opening Test at Tarouba, claiming eight wickets across the match, including a superb five-wicket haul in one innings. Despite his efforts, Pakistan suffered a 90-run defeat after their batting lineup failed to post competitive totals.
Instead of retaining one of their best performers, the team management handed a Test debut to young pacer Ubaid Shah for the series-deciding match in Port of Spain. The move immediately drew criticism from former cricketers, analysts, and fans, many questioning why a bowler who had just delivered a five-wicket haul was dropped.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam defended the selection, explaining that the changes were made after assessing the pitch and match conditions. He said the management believed a different bowling combination would be better suited for the surface, with Abbas left out as part of four changes to the side.
The decision has attracted additional attention because such selections are exceptionally rare in Test cricket. According to cricket statisticians, Abbas is believed to be the first Pakistan bowler since 1980 to be dropped immediately after taking a five-wicket haul in a Test innings. The last comparable instance occurred during Pakistan’s 1979-80 tour of India, when Ehteshamuddin lost his place following a five-wicket performance to accommodate the returning Imran Khan.
Questions over the selection intensified after Ubaid Shah’s challenging Test debut. On the opening day of the second Test, the young fast bowler conceded 56 runs in nine overs, making him Pakistan’s most expensive bowler of the day, although he managed to claim one wicket.
