Islamabad seeks 23,500 police personnel from Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, while Punjab imposes a five-day Section 144 order restricting public gatherings and weapons display.
ISLAMABAD: Security arrangements have been tightened in Islamabad and Punjab, with authorities seeking 23,500 additional police personnel from other provinces and imposing restrictions on public gatherings under Section 144.
According to the details provided, Islamabad has requested 15,000 police personnel from Punjab, 8,000 from Sindh and 500 from Balochistan to support security arrangements in the federal capital.
Separately, Section 144 has been imposed in Islamabad for two months, according to a notification. The restrictions are aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing any situation that could threaten public safety.
In Punjab, the Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province for five days through an order dated Sept. 13, 2026.
The Punjab notification states that credible reports were received from law enforcement and intelligence agencies about serious and imminent threats to public peace, tranquility and the safety of life and property across the province.
The notification also cites reports of possible terrorist activities involving suicide bombers, vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and targeted killings during large public gatherings.
Under the order, a complete ban has been imposed on assemblies, processions and gatherings involving five or more people at any public place, street, road, highway or open space across Punjab.
The restriction does not apply to marriage ceremonies, funeral prayers, burial processions and prayers at mosques and churches, as well as official duties of government and semi-government organizations and proceedings of courts. Other events permitted by the concerned deputy commissioner under the Punjab Civil Administration Act, 2017, are also exempted.
The Punjab government has additionally prohibited inciting people to participate in unlawful assemblies.
A complete ban has also been imposed on the carrying, display or branding of all kinds of weapons at public places. The restriction does not apply to law enforcement, intelligence and security agencies personnel performing official duties.
The notification said the measures were introduced after requests from the Punjab Police, Counter-Terrorism Department, Special Branch and divisional and district administrations for immediate preventive action against potential threats.
The order took effect immediately and will remain in force for five days from the date of issuance, unless modified or withdrawn earlier.
