Islamabad: (Ayesha Naz)- The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergencies Operation Center has issued a weather alert warning of heavy snowfall and rain in northern Pakistan from January 16 to 22 due to the arrival of a new western weather system.
According to the alert, Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are expected to experience moderate to heavy snowfall and rainfall. Areas likely to be affected include Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Astore, Chitral, Dir, Malam Jabba, Swat, Battagram, Naran, Kaghan, Galiyat, and Murree. In Azad Kashmir, snowfall and rain are expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, and Poonch.
The NDMA warned that heavy snowfall may cause slippery roads, temporary road closures, reduced visibility, and disruptions to daily life. There is also an increased risk of avalanches and landslides in mountainous regions.
Rain is also expected in several parts of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan between January 20 and 23. The authority cautioned that electricity supply may be affected during severe weather.
Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas and use tire chains if travel is essential. The NDMA has instructed provincial and district authorities to ensure preparedness, availability of machinery, and safety arrangements at tourist destinations.
