PM Shehbaz Sharif and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation and regional developments in New York.
New York: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with both sides discussing ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expand economic cooperation.
During the meeting, Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its historic and fraternal ties with Syria. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and political independence.
The prime minister also conveyed Pakistan’s good wishes for the Syrian people as they work toward national stabilization, cohesion, peace and economic recovery.
The two leaders discussed measures to further strengthen Pakistan-Syria relations, including enhanced high-level exchanges and the activation of institutional mechanisms between the two countries.
They also explored cooperation in trade and investment, education, information technology and other areas of mutual interest.
Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to contribute to Syria’s reconstruction and economic recovery, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s principled position in support of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter in promoting peace and stability in the region.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the regional situation, including the Palestine issue.
Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and for a just and lasting resolution of the Palestine issue in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and international law.
