Argentina’s Lionel Messi receives Spain’s prestigious 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for his outstanding football career and charitable work supporting children’s health and education.
Lionel Messi has received Spain’s prestigious 2026 Princess of Asturias Award in recognition of his exceptional football career and philanthropic efforts to improve access to health care and education for disadvantaged children.
The Argentine football star received the honour on Oct. 23 during a ceremony in Oviedo, the capital of Spain’s northern Asturias region. Princess Leonor, heir to the Spanish throne, presented the award, according to international media reports.
Established in 1981, the Princess of Asturias Awards recognise outstanding contributions in fields including the arts, sciences and sports. The award carries a prize of 50,000 euros.
Messi was selected for the 2026 honour in June. The jury recognised both his achievements on the football field and his charitable work supporting children in need.
Princess Leonor praises Messi’s talent and teamwork
During the ceremony, Princess Leonor praised Messi’s extraordinary talent and described his career as exceptional. She highlighted his ability to make remarkable performances appear routine, as well as his decision-making and commitment to teamwork.
The princess also noted that Messi had prioritised collective success over individual fame, underscoring the team-oriented approach that has characterised much of his career.
The event drew enthusiastic support from Argentine football fans, many of whom attended wearing their national team jerseys. Supporters welcomed Messi with cheers, chants and traditional music, creating a celebratory atmosphere around the ceremony.
The award adds another distinction to a career that has established Messi as one of the most successful players in football history.
From Barcelona icon to global football star
Messi spent 21 years with Spanish club Barcelona, where he won numerous major titles and became one of the most influential figures in the club’s history. His performances in Spain helped cement his reputation as one of the greatest footballers of his generation.
He left Barcelona in 2021 and spent two seasons with French club Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Major League Soccer in the United States, where he currently represents Inter Miami.
His international career has also brought major achievements. Messi has won the Ballon d’Or eight times and captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, securing one of the most significant honours of his career.
Beyond football, his charitable activities have contributed to his standing as a sports figure committed to social causes, particularly those involving children’s welfare.
The Princess of Asturias Award recognises both Messi’s sporting excellence and his wider social influence. The honour highlights the impact of his achievements and humanitarian work beyond the football field, adding an international distinction to an already celebrated career.
