Pakistan introduces electronic passports nationwide and through overseas diplomatic missions, while existing machine-readable passports remain valid until expiry.
Pakistan has announced the nationwide rollout of electronic passports (e-passports), extending the facility to Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad as part of efforts to modernize travel documents and strengthen passport security.
Director General of Immigration and Passports Muhammad Ali Rindhawa announced the development in a video message, saying the new passports had been introduced in line with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Rindhawa credited the passport department’s efforts under the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the directions of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, saying the team had worked intensively to complete the rollout.
Under the new policy, e-passports will be issued to applicants across Pakistan and through Pakistani diplomatic missions overseas for new applications and renewals, replacing machine-readable passports (MRPs) as the document issued under the new arrangement.
Existing machine-readable passports remain valid
Rindhawa clarified that existing machine-readable passports do not need to be replaced immediately. Current holders can continue using their passports until their printed expiry dates, provided the documents remain valid for their intended travel.
However, people applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one will receive an e-passport under the announced policy.
The clarification is important for travellers who may be concerned that the introduction of electronic passports requires them to submit an immediate renewal application. Existing passport holders can continue using their current documents without seeking an early replacement solely because of the rollout.
Electronic chip adds security features
E-passports contain an electronic chip that stores specified identity and biometric information, helping authorities verify a traveller’s identity and strengthen document security.
The passports follow internationally established technical standards intended to support reliable authentication and improve the integrity of travel documents.
The technology can also support identity checks at compatible automated border-control gates in countries where such facilities are available. However, access to e-gates depends on the destination country’s systems and eligibility requirements. Holding an electronic passport does not automatically guarantee faster entry, visa-free travel or exemption from other immigration requirements.
Government highlights unified passport system
The announcement was presented under the slogan “One Nation, One Passport, One Identity,” reflecting the government’s emphasis on a unified national travel document system.
The rollout marks a further step in Pakistan’s efforts to upgrade passport services and align its travel documentation with international technical requirements. Extending issuance to diplomatic missions abroad also brings overseas Pakistani applicants within the announced arrangement.
For applicants, the central change is that new passport applications and renewals will be processed through the e-passport system, while existing machine-readable passports will remain valid until expiry.
Applicants in Pakistan and overseas should consult official Immigration and Passports Department channels for the latest information about fees, application procedures and the arrangements available at individual passport offices and diplomatic missions.
