Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulates Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and his team as Pakistan secures the chairmanship of the G-24.
LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed Pakistan’s appointment as chair of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24), describing it as a significant diplomatic milestone that will strengthen the country’s voice and role in global economic affairs.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, Shehbaz expressed his pleasure over the development, saying the chairmanship would provide Pakistan with an important platform to contribute more effectively to international economic discussions.
The prime minister praised Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and the entire Finance Ministry team for their hard work, diplomatic efforts and professional capabilities in securing the position for Pakistan.
He particularly acknowledged their role during the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saying their efforts helped establish Pakistan as a prominent voice in the economic leadership of developing countries.
Shehbaz said Pakistan’s G-24 chairmanship would create opportunities for the country to contribute to discussions on reforms in the international financial system, fair financial assistance to address climate change and sustainable development opportunities for emerging economies.
The prime minister highlighted the importance of these issues for developing countries, which continue to seek greater representation in international financial institutions and more equitable access to resources needed to address economic and environmental challenges.
Pakistan’s leadership of the G-24 is expected to provide a platform for engaging with other developing economies on shared economic priorities and strengthening their collective voice in international financial discussions.
The prime minister also credited the Finance Ministry’s diplomatic engagement and professional efforts for helping Pakistan secure a prominent position in discussions concerning the global economic agenda.
The G-24 is an intergovernmental group that brings together developing countries to coordinate positions on international monetary and development finance issues. Its chairmanship provides an opportunity to represent the economic interests and concerns of developing economies in discussions involving major international financial institutions.
