Reported US strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island and Tehran’s claim of downing an American drone raise fresh concerns over regional security and diplomatic negotiations.
WASHINGTON: The United States has reportedly carried out limited military strikes against Iran’s Qeshm Island, raising fresh concerns about regional security and the future of diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
According to The Wall Street Journal, which cited US officials, American forces struck targets on the strategically located island on Monday, describing the operation as a defensive measure intended to protect US assets in the region.
One US official said the strikes were conducted in response to Iranian fire directed at an American aircraft. The operation was characterised as retaliatory action rather than the beginning of a renewed large-scale military campaign against Iran. Reuters and other international media outlets also reported the strikes, citing US officials.
The reported attack comes as US President Donald Trump has indicated that an agreement with Tehran remains possible, despite continued military tensions.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said the United States had not been engaged in fighting for several months. He also suggested that a deal with Iran could happen, signalling the possibility of a diplomatic resolution even as military developments continue.
However, reports of explosions on Qeshm Island have raised questions about the prospects for negotiations. Iran’s state news agency reported that five explosions were heard in succession on the island. Some reports also indicated that aircraft were seen flying over the area. Details about the targets, casualties and extent of the damage were not immediately available.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that it had shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone near the Strait of Hormuz. The claim has not been independently verified.
The reported military developments have heightened attention on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important maritime passage through which significant volumes of international oil shipments travel. Qeshm Island’s proximity to the waterway gives it considerable strategic importance for both regional security and maritime activity.
According to reports, the latest operation was part of a series of limited US strikes against Iranian targets in recent weeks. Some American officials described the operations as defensive measures intended to prevent threats to commercial shipping and US assets in the region.
The reported strike and Iran’s drone claim underscore the uncertainty surrounding the situation, with military activity continuing alongside indications that both sides could still pursue a diplomatic agreement.
Whether the latest developments will complicate negotiations or lead to further military exchanges remains unclear. For now, the situation around Qeshm Island and the Strait of Hormuz remains a significant concern for regional security and international energy markets.
