ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have extended Diwali greetings to the Hindu community in Pakistan and around the world, recognising its contributions to the country’s social, cultural and economic development.

In separate messages issued on Sunday, November 8, both leaders conveyed their heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Hindus celebrating the festival of lights. They described the Hindu community as an integral part of Pakistan’s national life and an important contributor to the country’s progress.

President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz acknowledged the community’s role in strengthening Pakistan and promoting social harmony, cultural diversity and national development. They emphasised that the country’s Hindu population remains an essential part of its national identity.

The two leaders also expressed pride in Pakistan’s religious and cultural diversity, describing the different traditions and beliefs within society as valuable assets that enrich the country.

Their messages highlighted the importance of respecting religious differences and recognising the contributions of all communities, regardless of their faith, to Pakistan’s development.

Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is among the most significant religious celebrations for Hindus. The festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

The occasion is traditionally marked by prayers, family gatherings, celebrations, the lighting of oil lamps and the exchange of greetings. Across Pakistan, members of the Hindu community celebrate Diwali by decorating their homes and temples, lighting traditional lamps and sharing happiness with relatives and friends.

The presidential and prime ministerial messages also underscored the importance of interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence in a country where people belonging to different religious communities contribute to the national fabric.

Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and provides constitutional protections for the rights of religious minorities. The recognition of religious diversity and the protection of minority rights remain important elements of the country’s constitutional framework.

The Diwali greetings from the country’s top leadership acknowledged the Hindu community’s longstanding presence and contributions to Pakistan while reinforcing the message of national unity and mutual respect.

The messages also carried a broader appeal for peaceful coexistence, emphasising that every religious community has a valuable role in shaping Pakistan’s present and future. By recognising the significance of Diwali, the president and prime minister highlighted the importance of embracing diversity as part of the country’s national identity.
