Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam backs the inclusion of emerging players while stressing the importance of combining youth with experience in upcoming Test assignments.
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has defended the inclusion of young players in the national squad, saying the team will maintain a balanced combination of experienced cricketers and emerging talent in upcoming Test assignments.
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi, Babar said Pakistan had already decided to invest in younger players during its previous tour of England, despite concerns about the lack of experience in the current Test setup.
He acknowledged that the national Test side was undergoing a significant transition, with seven to eight players belonging to the younger generation. However, he expressed confidence in their abilities, noting that several had gained valuable experience in first-class cricket and were performing well.
“We will go with a combination of senior and junior players in Test cricket,” Babar said, highlighting the importance of maintaining a balance between experience and fresh talent.
The captain also addressed questions about his individual batting performances, acknowledging that no cricketer could be perfect and that there was always room for improvement.
He said he regularly reviewed his mistakes and believed that gaining experience would help him develop further as a player. Babar added that fluctuations in performance were a natural part of cricket and players could not be expected to produce the same results in every match.
Discussing his leadership responsibilities, Babar said he remained in communication with the selectors whenever necessary and participated in discussions about the team’s requirements.
He stressed that every series was important to him and that his primary objective was to help Pakistan win matches. As a senior member of the squad, he said he remained committed to producing strong performances and meeting supporters’ expectations.
Babar also acknowledged that fans were expecting an improved performance from him, indicating his awareness of the pressure surrounding his batting form.
The Pakistan captain also praised former national batting great Mohammad Yousuf, describing him as a legend and one of the country’s finest cricketers.
Although Babar said he had not yet contacted Yousuf, he expressed his willingness to learn from the former Pakistan batter if he approached him.
His remarks highlight Pakistan’s approach to rebuilding its Test side through a combination of emerging players and experienced campaigners. The strategy reflects the team’s intention to give younger cricketers opportunities while retaining the experience needed to compete in international Test cricket.
Babar’s comments also underline the challenges of managing a team in transition, particularly the need to develop young players while maintaining consistent performances and meeting expectations from supporters.
