Punxsutawney Phil delivered his much-anticipated verdict on Monday morning, predicting six more weeks of winter after spotting his shadow during the annual Groundhog Day 2026 celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
The world-famous groundhog emerged from his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob shortly after sunrise, greeted by cheers laughter and a few playful boos from thousands of spectators who gathered before dawn. Members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, dressed in their traditional black coats and top hats officially announced Phil’s forecast to the crowd.
Phil made his appearance around 7 a.m. marking the 140th time the groundhog has been consulted for a seasonal prediction since the tradition began in 1887. Festivities started early with celebrations kicking off at 3 a.m. featuring live music fireworks and weekend-long events that began on Friday January 30.
Despite the excitement, weather experts stress that Phil’s prediction is symbolic rather than scientific. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has noted there is no proven connection between a groundhog seeing its shadow and real weather trends with Phil’s historical accuracy estimated at around 40 percent.
Still, Punxsutawney Phil remains a cherished winter tradition, offering humor, community spirit, and a moment of seasonal fun whether winter lingers or spring arrives early.
