Google introduces Android 17 beta, featuring developer-focused upgrades and consumer-friendly user experience improvements
Google has released the first beta of Android 17, bringing both under-the-hood improvements for developers and subtle user experience (UX) enhancements for consumers. The beta comes more than eight months after Android 16 rolled out, signaling a move toward a more continuous and polished release cycle.
Replacing the former Developer Preview program, Google’s new Canary channel delivers over-the-air (OTA) updates for users who want early access to new features. This approach ensures faster feature testing, improved beta stability, and removes the need for manual flashing of images.
Android 17’s first beta targets the Platform Stability milestone in March, at which point APIs and app-facing behaviors will be finalized. Developers then have several months to adjust their apps ahead of general availability.
The upcoming Android 17 release, set for the second quarter of 2026, will include some breaking changes for apps. Notably, the OS (API level 37) removes the developer opt-out for orientation and resizability restrictions on large-screen devices, requiring apps to work seamlessly across all form factors.
