Tehran condemns attacks on nuclear sites as violations of international law, seeks urgent global response
Iran and Russia have formally requested an emergency session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors following recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities by the United States and Israel. In a letter to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Tehran described the attacks as a “flagrant violation” of the United Nations Charter, IAEA statutes, and international law safeguarding nuclear sites, urging member states to address what it calls “wrongful acts against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.”
Officials in Vienna confirmed that, at Russia’s request, an extraordinary board session will be held on March 2, 2026, a day before the regular quarterly meeting. Discussions will focus on the legality, impact, and broader implications of the strikes. Moscow has consistently criticized the US and Israel, calling the attacks “irresponsible” and a threat to global security and nuclear non-proliferation.
Tehran maintains that its nuclear program is strictly peaceful under IAEA safeguards and rejects claims justifying military action. The IAEA has stressed the “utmost urgency” in verifying Iran’s nuclear materials in the aftermath of the attacks. The emergency meeting underscores rising diplomatic tensions and highlights concerns over the future of international oversight of Iran’s nuclear activities.
