State news agency says high-ranking military and defense figures were targeted in weekend attacks on the capital
TEHRAN: Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that senior Iranian military leaders were killed during coordinated attacks on the country over the weekend, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.
According to the state agency, the strikes targeted key defense installations and leadership figures in Tehran. Among those killed was Seyed Abdolrahim Mousavi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces. IRNA also reported the death of Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh in the same wave of attacks.
The report stated that the country’s “top military and defense leadership” was directly targeted, though it did not immediately provide details about the source of the strikes or the extent of the broader damage.
Iranian authorities have not released further operational specifics, but officials described the incident as a serious assault on national security. Analysts say the deaths of such high-ranking figures could have wide-reaching implications for the country’s military command structure and regional posture.
