Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal sets April 1 as qualifying date for voter registration
WEB DESK: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission on Tuesday officially began preparations for the 2026 general elections, announcing April 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for voter registration. The directives were issued by Chief Election Commissioner, retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, during the Commission’s first formal meeting following his swearing-in last Friday.
With limited time remaining before the elections, the Chief Election Commissioner emphasized the immediate commencement of preparatory work. The Commission decided that assistant commissioners across AJK will act as registration officers, while in Pakistan, district election commissioners, subject to the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan’s approval, will serve as registration officers for refugees from occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Legislative Assembly members who have not yet submitted their statements of assets due to earlier delays are required to file their declarations within 10 days. Non-compliance will result in suspension of membership under the law.
Regarding political parties, the Commission will issue public notices urging them to complete their registration process promptly. Additionally, the Secretary of the Election Commission has been directed to form a scrutiny committee to present eligible party cases to the Commission within one week.
