The British model and actress Cara Delevingne says surviving a near-fatal overdose pushed her toward sobriety, while she now hopes her story inspires others battling addiction to seek help.
British model and actress Cara Delevingne has shared an emotional account of her battle with addiction, revealing that surviving a near-fatal overdose became the defining moment that led her to embrace sobriety and rebuild her life.
The 33-year-old star described choosing recovery as one of the hardest decisions she has ever made. Reflecting on the darkest stage of her addiction, Delevingne said there was a moment when everything around her suddenly fell silent, making her realize she urgently needed professional treatment.
She revealed that doctors medically weaned her off GBL, an industrial chemical that can be misused as a recreational drug and is associated with severe withdrawal symptoms and physical dependence. Delevingne said recovery was impossible to manage alone and required intensive medical support.
The actress admitted that becoming sober forced her to confront painful emotions and the consequences of her past choices. She hopes that speaking openly about her experience will encourage others struggling with addiction to seek help without fear of judgment and help reduce the stigma surrounding substance abuse.
Delevingne also reflected on the widely circulated photographs taken after the 2022 Burning Man festival, acknowledging that she was mentally unwell, had suffered a seizure, and was not sober when the images were captured. She said the incident affected her modeling career, with several brands choosing not to renew contracts despite not officially ending existing partnerships.
