Severe snowfall and strong winds forced the rescue team to retreat to Camp 2 as authorities arranged helicopter support and alternative measures.
The recovery of Dr. Asma’s body from Spantik Mountain in the Karakoram range has been delayed after severe weather conditions forced a rescue team to turn back from near Camp 3, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Sunday.
In a post on X, Tarar said high-altitude porters were expected to reach Camp 3 to retrieve Dr. Asma’s body and bring it down to base camp by Monday.
However, the rescue team reached almost near Camp 3 before heavy snowfall and strong winds forced its members to retreat to Camp 2.
Tarar said a helicopter has been authorised for the operation, with coordination established between the Gilgit-Baltistan government and the Frontier Corps Northern Areas (FCNA).
“Alternate arrangements are also in place,” Tarar said, adding that authorities would do whatever was possible under the prevailing circumstances.
The minister also said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was being kept updated on the situation.
