Meta has partnered with defense technology firm Anduril to develop an AI-powered augmented reality combat helmet designed to provide U.S. soldiers with real-time battlefield intelligence and advanced drone control capabilities.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram and WhatsApp, is making a significant move beyond social media by entering the defense technology sector. The company has joined forces with Anduril Industries to develop advanced military equipment powered by artificial intelligence, marking a new chapter in its technological ambitions.
The partnership, announced in 2025, reunites Meta with Palmer Luckey, the entrepreneur who created Oculus before the virtual reality company was acquired by Meta Platforms. Luckey later left Meta, but both sides are now collaborating once again on next-generation military systems for the U.S. military.
At the center of the project is a combat helmet known as “Eagle Eye.” The augmented reality system is designed to display an AI assistant directly within a soldier’s field of vision. The helmet can overlay battlefield maps, teammate locations, live drone feeds, and AI-identified targets onto the real-world environment, providing soldiers with enhanced situational awareness.
According to media reports, the technology may also allow military personnel to control drones and robotic systems through visual interaction, reducing response times during operations. The U.S. military has reportedly invested $159 million in the initiative, with around 100 prototypes expected to be delivered by 2026.
The development has sparked discussion among technology experts and policymakers, as one of the world’s largest social media companies expands into military innovation. Supporters argue that AI-driven systems could improve battlefield safety and efficiency, while critics raise concerns about the growing role of major technology firms in defense and warfare.
