Karachi’s: Gul Plaza, which killed at least 27 people and left more than 80 missing, triggered an intense debate in the National Assembly on Tuesday, with lawmakers calling for urgent reforms to prevent similar tragedies.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the incident exposed serious shortcomings in fire safety and emergency response systems. He stressed the need for strong local governments across all provinces, saying effective grassroots systems are essential for addressing emergencies promptly. Criticizing the 18th Amendment, Asif termed it a “hoax,” arguing that while powers were devolved to provinces, local governments remained weak due to political resistance.
MQM-P lawmaker Farooq Sattar urged the government to declare the incident a national tragedy, highlighting Karachi’s major contribution to the national economy. He demanded the formation of an investigation committee and the activation of the Department of Civil Defence, calling for greater authority for local governments in major cities.
PPP MNA Syeda Shehla Raza advised against reopening debates on the 18th Amendment, stating that Sindh already has a functioning local government system. She acknowledged safety lapses at Gul Plaza, revealing that most entrances were closed during the fire, severely hindering rescue operations.
