Erling Haaland’s clinical finishing powered Norway to a commanding win as they returned to the World Cup stage after nearly three decades.
Erling Haaland wasted no time announcing his arrival on football’s biggest stage, scoring twice as Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 on Tuesday in their first World Cup appearance in 28 years. The Manchester City forward’s brilliant display helped Norway begin their campaign with confidence and move to the top of their group.
Haaland opened the scoring with a sharp finish after David Moller Wolfe’s low cross found him inside the box. The striker doubled the advantage soon after by taking advantage of a defensive mistake, blocking the goalkeeper’s clearance before calmly finishing into the net.
The 25-year-old continued his remarkable record of scoring on debut in major competitions, adding the World Cup to his previous achievements in the Bundesliga, Premier League and Champions League.
Norway showed some early struggles, with misplaced passes and defensive gaps giving Iraq opportunities. Aymen Hussein pulled one goal back after Norway failed to react quickly in defence, but the comeback hopes were short-lived.
Despite some areas needing improvement, Haaland’s impact proved the difference. Captain Martin Odegaard had a quieter game, while coach Stale Solbakken will look for a more complete team performance in tougher matches ahead.
