Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf receives an ICC sanction after an on-field altercation with Will Jacks, while England are fined for a slow over-rate following Pakistan’s one-wicket ODI victory.
LAHORE: Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for breaching the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Code of Conduct during the dramatic one-day international against England on Sunday. England have also been fined 15% of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate.
According to the ICC, Rauf committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.
The sanction adds one demerit point to Rauf’s disciplinary record, taking his total to five following his third offence within a 24-month period.
The incident occurred at the end of the 46th over of Pakistan’s innings, when Rauf appealed for a wide delivery at the non-striker’s end before becoming involved in a heated exchange with England all-rounder Will Jacks.
Rauf raised his bat during the confrontation and continued the exchange despite a warning from umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid. He subsequently brushed past the umpire while moving towards Jacks, leading to the disciplinary action.
England were penalised after being found three overs short of the required rate, even after time allowances had been taken into account.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time. England’s 15% penalty reflects the three-over shortfall.
Rauf and England captain Harry Brook admitted their respective offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As a result, neither case required a formal hearing.
The charges were brought by on-field umpires Rashid Riaz and Sharfuddoula, third umpire Wayne Knights and fourth umpire Nassir Hussain.
The disciplinary decisions followed a remarkable contest in which Pakistan defeated England by one wicket in a dramatic finish.
Shadab Khan played a decisive role in the victory, scoring an unbeaten century and sharing an unbroken 89-run partnership with Rauf for the final wicket. Their late stand guided Pakistan to victory with 17 balls remaining, completing a memorable turnaround for the home side.
The result also secured Pakistan’s place in the ODI tri-series final, where they are scheduled to face Sri Lanka on Oct. 31.
While Rauf’s conduct during the exchange with Jacks resulted in an ICC sanction, the fast bowler also contributed to Pakistan’s successful chase during a match that featured both a tense on-field confrontation and a dramatic finish.
