A new leak suggests Apple could reserve a variable-aperture main camera for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, creating a major hardware distinction from the smaller Pro model.
Apple may be preparing one of its most significant camera upgrades yet for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a new leak suggesting the flagship could receive a variable-aperture main camera not offered on the standard iPhone 18 Pro.
The claim, attributed to tipster Ice Universe, indicates that Apple could use the advanced camera system to create a clearer hardware distinction between its two premium iPhone models. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is also expected to feature other hardware improvements, including a next-generation A20 Pro chip, a larger battery and upgraded camera technology.
Variable aperture could improve photography
Unlike a conventional fixed-aperture camera, a variable-aperture system can mechanically adjust the size of the lens opening. A wider aperture allows more light to reach the sensor, which can be useful in low-light conditions, while a narrower opening can provide greater control over exposure and depth of field.
Such a system could give the iPhone more flexibility in capturing different scenes and potentially complement Apple’s computational photography technology.
The latest leak does not specify the aperture range or explain exactly how Apple might implement the mechanism.
Why only the Pro Max?
The larger physical size of the iPhone 18 Pro Max could provide Apple with additional internal space for more complex camera hardware. A variable-aperture mechanism may require components that would be difficult to accommodate within the smaller Pro model.
The larger chassis could also provide room for a higher-capacity battery, although the additional hardware may come with a trade-off in weight and thickness.
Ice Universe has previously claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could weigh about 240 grams and measure roughly 9mm thick. If accurate, that would make the device heavier and thicker than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Apple has used exclusive Pro Max cameras before
Apple has previously differentiated its premium models through camera hardware. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, for example, introduced a tetraprism telephoto system with 5x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro offered 3x optical zoom.
The rumored variable-aperture camera could represent a similar strategy for the iPhone 18 generation, giving customers another reason to choose the larger and more expensive Pro Max.
