India’s T20 International setup could be heading toward a significant transition, with reports suggesting that current captain Suryakumar Yadav may soon be removed from the leadership role. Multiple Indian media outlets have indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India is evaluating major changes ahead of upcoming squad announcements for tours of Ireland and England.
The reported development has intensified speculation not only about Yadav’s captaincy but also about his place in India’s preferred T20 lineup. Selectors are believed to be assessing long-term plans as they look to build a squad capable of competing consistently in future global tournaments.
According to reports, the BCCI is considering a younger captain as part of a broader transition strategy. The move is said to be driven by a combination of factors, including recent performance trends, squad evolution, and long-term leadership planning. Yadav, now 35, has experienced a noticeable decline in output compared to the high standards he established earlier in his international career. Between January 2025 and the conclusion of the 2026 T20 World Cup cycle, he scored 702 runs in 35 matches at an average of 26. Although respectable, the numbers fall short of the explosive consistency that once made him one of the world’s most feared T20 batters.
Despite the recent downturn, his overall T20 International record remains exceptional. Yadav has accumulated 3,272 runs in 113 matches at an average of 36.35 while maintaining a remarkable strike rate of 162.94. Those figures continue to underline his status as one of India’s most impactful players in the shortest format.
His struggles have also extended to franchise cricket. During the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League, Yadav managed only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. The dip in form has reportedly increased pressure on selectors as they evaluate leadership options and squad balance.
Yadav assumed the T20I captaincy following the retirement of Rohit Sharma after India’s triumph at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. His tenure has delivered strong results, including 40 wins in 52 matches and a success rate of approximately 76 percent. He also guided India to victory in the Asia Cup 2025, strengthening his credentials as a leader.
One of Yadav’s most memorable contributions came during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, when his spectacular boundary catch to dismiss David Miller played a decisive role in securing the title for India. The moment remains one of the defining images of the tournament.
However, cricket boards often balance past achievements against future requirements.
