Historic victory over England boosts Italy’s confidence as winger Louis Lynagh says the Azzurri are ready to challenge for the Six Nations title in the coming years.
Six Nations Championship side Italy believes its breakthrough victory over England national rugby union team could mark the start of a new era, with winger Louis Lynagh confident the team can eventually challenge for the 2026 title.
Italy stunned England 23–18 in Rome last weekend, securing their first win against the English side since joining the tournament in 2000. The result also means Italy has now beaten every opponent in the Six Nations at least once.
The Azzurri currently sit fourth in the standings with nine points and travel to face Wales national rugby union team in Cardiff on Saturday. A win would mark the first time Italy has achieved three victories in a single Six Nations campaign.
Lynagh said belief inside the squad has grown significantly after the landmark result.
“A lot of our guys believe it. I feel this team can win the Six Nations, whether it’s next year or the year after,” he said. “We’re no longer just a one-off. On our day, we can beat almost any team.”
The 25-year-old winger, son of former Michael Lynagh, was born in Treviso to an Italian mother while his father played for Benetton. After representing England at youth level, he joined Benetton Treviso two years ago and soon earned his Italy call-up.
Italy also defeated Scotland national rugby union team earlier in the tournament, highlighting the team’s growing competitiveness.
Despite Wales being winless in the championship, Lynagh warned his teammates not to underestimate their final-round opponents.
“We’ve had this massive high of beating England, but it would be a huge disappointment if we lose to Wales,” he said. “We want to create history and keep building for the future.”
