England fast-bowling legend James Anderson could leave Lancashire after 25 years as the club reportedly declines to offer him a contract for the 2027 season.

England cricket legend James Anderson faces an uncertain playing future after Lancashire reportedly decided not to offer the veteran fast bowler a new contract for the 2027 season, potentially bringing his 25-year association with the county club to an end.

The 44-year-old continued playing county cricket after retiring from international cricket in 2024. He remains the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket history, with 704 wickets in 188 matches.

Anderson enjoyed an impressive County Championship campaign last season, claiming 50 wickets at an average of 17 while captaining Lancashire. His performances underlined his continued effectiveness in the longer format despite stepping away from international cricket.

Across his first-class career, Anderson has taken 1,193 wickets at an average of 24, establishing himself as one of England’s most accomplished fast bowlers.

According to reports, Anderson is now preparing to end his long association with Lancashire, the club where his professional career began. He first appeared at senior level for the Lancashire Cricket Board in 2000, aged 17, before making his county debut the following year.

The reported contract decision comes as Lancashire undertakes a review of its cricket operations following a disappointing County Championship season. The club finished second from bottom in Division Two despite entering the campaign with promotion ambitions.

The review is being overseen by interim chair Dame Sarah Storey and chief executive Richard Kenyon. As part of the restructuring, Lancashire recently appointed Paul Farbrace as its director of cricket at Old Trafford.

The changes come at a significant point for the club as it assesses its cricketing direction following a season that fell short of expectations. Anderson’s reported contract situation has added another major development to the ongoing review.

However, Lancashire has not issued an official statement confirming Anderson’s departure or explaining whether he will be offered another playing role with the club.

Until the county makes an announcement, the reports remain unconfirmed. Anderson’s next move, if he leaves Lancashire, will determine whether the experienced fast bowler continues his playing career elsewhere or brings his long association with the county to a close.
